About Earned Sick & Safe Time
Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time
Effective January 1, 2024, Minnesota's earned sick and safe time (ESST) law will require employers to provide paid leave to employees who work in the state. Minnesota's current sick and safe leave law remains in effect until December 31, 2023, and will be replaced by the new earned sick and safe time law on January 1, 2024.

Please note that the Duluth City Council passed an ordinance repealing the Duluth ESST ordinance that will take effect in January, 2024. Employers should plan to update their existing paid-leave policies to bring them into compliance with the standards of Minnesota ESST by January 1, 2024.
